Speculation in North Queensland is that JetStar will shortly announce a direct Singapore – Cairns link. The route is currently flown via Darwin by Airbus A320/A321 aircraft but a direct service would require the larger A330-200. JetStar have announced a reduction in frequencies on the Singapore – Auckland route and this could provide capacity for a limited A330-200 Singapore – Cairns service.

Reports from Japan suggest that JetStar may be about to enter into a joint venture with Japan Airlines to launch a new airline in Japan. JetStar and Japan Airlines would each hold a 30% stake with the remaining 40% held by other Japanese companies.

JetStar is already known in the Japanese market thanks to flights from Osaka and Tokyo Narita to Cairns and Coolangatta/Gold Coast and so the JetStar name is expected to be used.
