JetStar to Charge For Traditional Check In.

JetStar are set to charge an additional fee for traditional check-in on Australian domestic routes from November 2011. The drive is designed to push all passengers towards self-service check-in via the jetstar website, at airport self-service check-in machines or a SMS boarding passes. Self-service check in fees are expected to initially be set at a token $5 or $10 but will be increased if this does not drive sufficient passengers to self-service options. Once successfully implemented in Australia the fee is expected to be introduced on New Zealand domestic and eventually International services.

New JetStar Fare Structure Announced.

JetStar amended their fare structure today which now runs as follows:

Economy:

Starter – Carry on baggage only. Pay for checked baggage. Non changeable. Non refundable.

Starter Plus – Carry on baggage only. Pay for checked baggage. Free standard seat selection. Free changes as permitted by fare rules. Name changes permitted. QANTAS Frequent Flyer points and status credits at Discount Economy rate awarded.

Starter Max – Carry on baggage only. Pay for checked baggage. Free any seat selection. Free changes as permitted by fare rules. Tickets are refundable. Name changes permitted. Re-routing permitted. QANTAS Frequent Flyer points and status credits at Economy rate awarded.

Business – Travel on Business (formerly Star Class) on A330-200 services. Free checked baggage. Free any seat selection. Free in flight catering, entertainment and amenity pack. Date, name and route changes permitted.

Business Max – Travel on Business (formerly Star Class) on A330-200 services. Free checked baggage. Free any seat selection. Free in flight catering, entertainment and amenity pack. Tickets are refundable. Date, name and route changes permitted. QANTAS Frequent Flyer points and status credits at Business Class rate awarded. Lounge Access at Qantas Club, Gold Coast and partner lounges permitted.

In summary this means it is no longer possible for Economy passengers to purchase any fare with inclusive checked baggage allowance. Star Class is renamed Business and the base tickets have lounge access, QANTAS frequent flyer point accrual and the ability to refund removed. These benefits are reserved for the new Business Max level. Business Max fares appear to be set AU$200 per way above the standard Business fare.

A321 VH-VWX JQ83 Darwin Take-Off Incident.

Airbus A321 VH-VWX operating JQ83 Darwin – Denpasar departed Darwin without using the full length of the runway as required. At Darwin when taking off on runway 11 aircraft cross the runway, turn right onto a taxiway and the make two left turns to line up at the runway end. This flight turned left onto the runway instead of crossing it and consequently had 1120m less usable runway. Though the aircraft took off safely the ATSB has launched an investigation.

New Zealand Ash Cloud Cancellations.

Due to ash from the Chilean volcano drifting into New Zealand airspace JetStar has today cancelled all Domestic flights plus International flights from Christchurch and later Auckland. Ash drifted into the Melbourne area later in the day causing cancellation of all services into and out of Melbourne. Cancellations began yesterday with JQ151 Sydney – Christchurch. 

JetStar Melbourne Weather Diversions.

Due to early morning fog at Melbourne the following flights diverted via Adelaide:

JQ8 Singapore – Melbourne operated by A330-200 VH-EBF

JQ986 Sydney – Perth operated by A320 VH-VQJ

JetStar to Commence Auckland – Dunedin Service.

JetStar have announced plans to commence service on the Auckland – Dunedin route commencing on July 14th, breaking Air New Zealand’s monopoly on the route. Flight timings will be:

JQ283 Auckland 0905 – Dunedin 1100

JQ282 Dunedin 1130 – Auckland 1310

The service will operate daily with Airbus A320 aircraft.
